Does Pipers Farm buy meat in from anyone else?
| NO! All the meat we sell we produce ourselves. We fully utilise the
traditional skills and resources of small, local family farming businesses by paying them
to do day-to-day farming activities for us; a sort of B & B for our animals! |
It has always been a very important objective of Pipers Farm to help to
sustain the local infrastructure of smaller scale farming businesses.
Why does Pipers Farm not use the word Organic?
| 20 years ago when we started Pipers Farm we knew that we wanted to set
the highest possible standards, and be completely responsible for adhering to them. Most
importantly we knew that the animals we grow and the meat we sell must never go out of
our control. Most of the Organic meat in the High Street is processed in large abattoirs
and processing plants - that is simply unacceptable to us. |
| Because we are completely involved in the whole process, we are very
happy and able to answer any precise questions that our customers might have. |
In general terms though we believe that we go at least as far, and
probably further than most customers would expect us to in setting standards that safe
guard the wholesomeness and nutritional values of our meat.
How can I be sure that Pipers Farm meat is reared
humanely and
without growth promoting additives?
Because we are producing all the meat that we sell. ALL our animals are
grown slowly and allowed to reach natural maturity. We are totally committed to allowing
our animals to behave as naturally as possible throughout their lives, and thereby
minimising their levels of stress. It is completely against our principles to include any
artificial additives to try and enhance the growth rate of our animals.

When and why was Pipers Farm started?
| Pipers Farm was started in 1987 when Henri and Peter Greig had moved down
from a high hill farm in Wensleydale, back to the small family farm where Peter had been
brought up. Their eldest son Edward, was 2 and their younger son, Will had just been
born. Two factors had a big influence on them and they were the catalysts for the birth
of Pipers Farm. |
| First: Most of the neighbouring family farms which had existed when Peter
was growing up had disappeared. Immediately it was obvious to Peter & Henri the
enormous value in those farms which was being lost to the countryside. |
| Second: One day Peter was working in his father's factory chicken sheds.
These were intensive broiler chickens destined for a high quality High Street retailer.
He was shocked to realise that if one of those shoppers had stood where he was standing
at the time they would probably not eat chicken again. Also Peter & Henri felt very
strongly that they did not want to feed their young children on meat which had been grown
in conditions which required the routine use of antibiotics to keep them alive and also
to artificially increase their growth rate. |
| There had to be an answer to both of these serious issues, and as
farmers, Peter & Henri set out to address them. . . Pipers Farm was born! |

your card number every time, it also means that no hacker can access your credit card
number from Pipers Farm.
Please note - if you are shopping with Pipers Farm a second time and your credit card
number is automatically put into the box, this is because your web browser is using

Will I know when my order is going to be
delivered?
| Your order will be delivered in the morning on the day that you have
requested. We keep a careful check on its progress, and ask our customers to contact us
if it has not arrived by midday. |
| If it is more convenient for you, then we can arrange for your parcel to
be left safe until you return home. This works well because the orders are so carefully
packed that your order will be in perfect condition until you get home later in the
day. |
How does my order arrive?
| Orders arrive very carefully packed in strong cardboard boxes, with
shredded paper used for insulation. |
What do I do with the packaging after I have
unpacked my order?
| Both the boxes and the paper are ideal for recycling. |
Can I freeze meat from Pipers Farm?
| Almost all of our products are delivered to you vacuum-packed and blast
frozen. They are in perfect condition to put straight into your freezer. One of the big
advantages is that each time you go to your freezer, our products will look perfectly
packed and very appetising. The only products which we generally send out unfrozen are
fresh Poultry at Christmas time, and also large pieces of Cooked or Raw Ham. However all
of these products can also be frozen if required. |
How long does Pipers Farm meat last in the
freezer?
| Because our meat is so well hung, and therefore has very little water in
it, and because it has been vacuum-packed and blast-frozen it keeps extremely well in the
freezer, for up to 6 months, but it is best to enjoy it sooner than that! |
Will I be able to use the quantities I want
straight out of the freezer?
| Yes! Our free-flow packaging of many of our products means that you can
take out just the number of portions that you need for that day and leave the rest for
another time. If you need a meal in a hurry then you can drop individual portions, in
their packaging, into cool water - they will thaw in about 10-15 minutes. With the
Burgers and Sausages, you can take just the number that you need out of the freezer and
then cook them gently from frozen. |
Do Pipers Farm use any additives in their
products?
| All of the ingredients that we use to make all of our Sausages, Burgers,
Ready Casseroles and Cooked Meals are exactly the same as you would use at home. For
example, salt, pepper, fresh herbs, freshly ground spices and sometimes good wine! When
we cure our Bacon and Hams we use a traditional brine solution which has a small amount
of Salt-Petre in it. This is a mixture of Potassium Nitrate and Sodium Nitrite. Very
importantly though this is in very small amounts and there are absolutely none of the
other chemicals which are so often used in industrial bacon production. |
If we enjoy our order will we be able to
get the same again?
| Pipers Farm has been built around a determination to produce meat that is
consistently excellent to eat - every time. We achieve this by controlling every detail
of all the meat that we sell. |
Are there any cooking guidelines with
Pipers Farm products?
| Yes! We are passionate about our food and love cooking, and that is how
we want our customers to feel as well. We put clear guidelines on the labels in every
pack and also put a wide selection of our favourite recipes in the recipe pages of our
online shop. Bon appetit! |
