A great BBQ should be easy going and simple, with the emphasis on good company, fresh BBQ food and chilled drinks. Thinking of getting some mates together, but don't have a clue where to start, and want to look like an old hand at the grill? Skim through these simple steps to the big day and you wont even break a sweat...and not a supermarket in sight!

Step 1. The Invites
From the outset, keep it casual with the invites – don’t chase your mates, let everyone sort it out themselves! Try a nifty online schedule tool like Doodle (doodle.com) to get everyone in sync.

Step 2. A Week To Go
Now is the time to start checking the weather forecast. If it looks dodgy, there always the option to postpone or shop for a gazebo! If it looks really bad, Doodle is perfect for rescheduling.
Check you have enough gas or charcoal to cook with, the BBQ is clean and serviceable with all the tools present.
Think about plates, cutlery and glasses. Or will it be burger in one hand, chilled bottle in the other?

Step 3. Order The Tucker
The best BBQ cook in the world will struggle with over-processed, additive-heavy supermarket meats, and the low taste plus poor cooking results will be noticed by your guests.
Luckily, here at Pipers Farm we have great BBQ food meat packs, featuring meat produced slowly and naturally that is especially good at retaining full flavour and succulent texture during the unforgiving BBQ cooking process. With less fat, there's less chance of flare-up from dripping grease.
Innovative packing and flexible ordering options mean that you can get exactly what you need, and you can specify when you need it delivered. So easy!
And as a complete bonus, there are a range of offers featuring discounts of up to 25%! Order your BBQ food here.
And while you are ordering the meat online, dont forget the drinks (www.drinksdirect.co.uk)

Step 4. The day before
Give that weather forecast one more go – if it still looks dodgy, think about going for the gazebo.
Now is a good time to make up any salad dressing - here are some ideas.
For marinades, some meats are better left overnight, so now is the time to prepare. Some great marinades can be found here
Start chilling the drinks. And if you need lots of ice on the day for a big beer bucket, fill up a few lunchboxes with water and put in the freezer - smashing up the ice from these is much easier than producing thousands of ice cubes.

Step 5. The morning of the big day
Visit the local green grocer and baker for salad and bread.
Garden furniture and lighting – make sure there are plenty of seats, and outside lighting for later.
Unless you have a DJ on hand, music is best handled by some speakers plugged into an ipod – create a lazy chilled summer playlist to get everyone in the right vibe.
Prepare a water spray bottle - flames from dripping grease give food a bitter, charred taste, so keep this on hand to stop any problems

Step 6. Time to cook
Get the food ready for the grill, Remove the meat from the fridge an hour before cooking. This will bring it up to an ambient temperature, and ensures full flavour cooking. Be sure to keep the meat covered, and out of direct sunlight.
Add flavour to your meat and keep it tender by marinating for at least 20 mins
OK we are nearly there...

Step 7: Lighting the BBQ.
If you have gas, no worries! But if you have charcoal, hopefully its dry. Using lighter fluid or bricks can taint the food flavour, so try using just newspaper. Scrunch up a few sheets and build a pyramid of charcoal bricks over the paper. The size should be so that when you eventually spread them out they cover the cooking area of the BBQ. Light the paper, and give it about 20 - 30 minutes. Look for the charcoal to go white on most of the surface. Spread out the charcoal, close the lid for a final 5 minutes, then you are ready to go.

Step 8: Cooking the BBQ Food
Keep the grill a reasonable hight above the coals, so the heat cooks through before any sign of charring. Keep an inch or so around all the BBQ meat so it cooks evenly.
Make sure you ask your guests how they like it their food cooked, but ensure you have the final say as to when it's ready. Relax - the quality meat and your preparations mean that in no time your guests will be in taste heaven, and your status as a BBQ guru is instantly awarded. Go get that beer and turn up the music!

Here at Piper's Farm we can help with your questions on what makes for great BBQ food, and guide you through exactly how your meat is produced and prepared on our Devon farm. Contact us to find out more. We cant help with the weather but at least now that's all you have to worry about!

Top 10 Tips To Buy Meat Online: Advice on buying and serving.

Does choosing an online butcher mean sacrificing advice? At Pipers Farm we think not, and gladly extend the ethics of our friendly shop service to our online customers and visitors. I've put together some of the most popular advice below, but we'd love to hear from you if there is anything further we can help with.

1. Do You Like Eating Fat?
If not then you do not need to pay for it from Pipers Farm! Our animals all grow slowly and reach natural maturity – that is when they develop marbling fat: these are fine strands of fat within the muscle. These cook out and help to add flavour but you don't feel like you are actually eating fat.

2. Do You Like To Eat Meat Rare Or More Well Done?
It is a matter of personal taste, but we would always encourage our customers to eat our meat without overcooking it. There is no need to cook our meat to “make it safe”. The only reason to cook Pipers Farm meat is to enhance the eating sensation, so that it is an absolute pleasure. Clear, simple cooking guidelines are on every pack.

3. Select A Cut Depending On How You Want To Cook
Some cuts are better suited to cooking for longer if that is how you prefer it. Red Ruby Silverside can be cooked for longer than Red Ruby Topside. Slow-roasting in a casserole on a bed of root vegetables is the best way to cook to “well done”. Red Ruby Brisket or Oxtail are perfect for this.

4. Give It A Rest
After cooking, “Resting” meat is very important – it allows the cooking juices to “settle” within the joint, and the flavour develops as it cools slightly.

5. Carve Thinly
Our Red Ruby silverside and topside benefits from some careful carving, so take a few moments to sharpen that knife. If cooked rare, a thin slice is as good as a lot of Fillet you might buy!

6. Buy The Size You Need
Our meat is always slowly grown and properly hung so it doesn't shrink when you cook it. Our shop pages always give a guide on quantities to allow.

7. Double The Pleasure
Always buy meat to allow enough so you can have some of the joint for a cold meal on another day.

8. Plan Ahead
Our “ready-to-cook” packaging means that each portion is packed separately. Steaks for example can be taken out singly and dropped into cool water so that they can be cooked in less than half an hour...and there is no waste.

9. Try Our Prepared Meats And Meals.
Most of our burgers, some sausages and many of our ready cooked meals are Gluten-Free. Our ready meals are cooked just like you would at home!

10. Your Personal Online Butcher
All our products come with clear cooking guidelines that are simple to follow, and ensure cooking success! And if you like to buy meat and get sound advice, we are always delighted to talk to you on the phone. Our customer service team really do know how to help you, and get the best out of Pipers Farm meat.
