A few weeks ago, on a quiet Saturday morning, Henri received a phone call. It was John Burton Race asking if he could come, film crew in tow, and buy a chicken from us at the farm! He was taking part in ITV's 10 Mile Menu, where two celebrity teams had been tasked with cooking up a three course meal using ingredients sourced within a ten mile radius of Topsham. Surely enough, half an hour later he arrived in the 10 Mile Menu car, along with Kaye Adams, his team mate.
Peter took them through the way we produce our chickens, from the way we slowly grow them, to the fact we hang them for two weeks, to the careful butchery. Then, able to tick the chicken off of their shopping list, the pair rushed off to get the rest of their ingredients from other local producers, including our neighbour Gibson's Plaice along Magdalen Road.
Once in the kitchen later that day, the duo simply roasted the crown of our chicken with just a touch of seasoning. They used the rest of the bird to produce lovely chicken stock to add flavour to the accompanying pumpkin risotto. It was all served with spinach, cabbage and a creamy mushroom sauce and served up to the Topsham Ladies Cricket Team who were the judges for the day. See the full recipe here. They were all impressed with the quality and taste of the chicken. However the opposing team, made up of Aldo Zilli and Hannah Sandling, just managed to win with their overall menu!

The EU has just brought in a new ceiling on maximum stocking density for industrial chickens grown within the EU. It is now set at 42kgs/sq.m. Â The current maximum for UK is 38k/sq.m. This is another illustration of how the process of industrialising food production shows little sign of slowing down. The principle is firmly established that food can continually be produced more cheaply.
But our customers are increasingly coming to realise that cheap food does not necessarily equate to value for money. Most chicken you can buy is acknowledged to be tasteless and without texture. Our chickens deliver eating pleasure, wholesome nutrition and good value measured by price per portion.
