10 Mile Menu

A few weeks ago, on a quiet Saturday morning, Henri received a phone call. It was John Burton Race asking if he could come, film crew in tow, and buy a chicken from us at the farm! He was taking part in ITV's 10 Mile Menu, where two celebrity teams had been tasked with cooking up a three course meal using ingredients sourced within a ten mile radius of Topsham. Surely enough, half an hour later he arrived in the 10 Mile Menu car, along with Kaye Adams, his team mate.

Peter took them through the way we produce our chickens, from the way we slowly grow them, to the fact we hang them for two weeks, to the careful butchery. Then, able to tick the chicken off of their shopping list, the pair rushed off to get the rest of their ingredients from other local producers, including our neighbour Gibson's Plaice along Magdalen Road.

Once in the kitchen later that day, the duo simply roasted the crown of our chicken with just a touch of seasoning. They used the rest of the bird to produce lovely chicken stock to add flavour to the accompanying pumpkin risotto. It was all served with spinach, cabbage and a creamy mushroom sauce and served up to the Topsham Ladies Cricket Team who were the judges for the day. See the full recipe here. They were all impressed with the quality and taste of the chicken. However the opposing team, made up of Aldo Zilli and Hannah Sandling, just managed to win with their overall menu!
